An interview with Dr.Zakir Naik, noted Muslim scholar

On what this conference hopes to achieve…
We’ve got 19 scholars from around the world, on one platform, to spread the message of peace. Mumbai’s cosmopolitan climate made it the best venue for this event. We are here to clear misconceptions about Islam. There are 300 panels and 50 models installed at the exhibition to spread awareness about the religion and its history, geography and science.

On Islam and terrorism…
There are black sheep in all communities. In this case, it is the media that is biased. There are several terrorist attacks, but the media prefers highlighting the attacks made by a few Muslims. Aren’t the Tamil Tigers terrorists? Isn’t the IRA a terrorist organisation? We shouldn’t typecaste the entire community because of a few individuals who have been misguided by anti-social elements. Today the root cause of terrorism is politics.

On Taslima Nasreen…
Taslima is free to write whatever she wants, but not if it hurts the sentiments of other people. She has gone beyond just hurting sentiments; she has committed slander, which is prohibited. She has stated that the Quran is not a book of God. Most religions condemn such behaviour.

On MF Hussain…
MF Hussain should be punished. Anyone who makes nude paintings of any woman has to be punished. He has done worse by painting a goddess nude.

On Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses…
Rajeev Gandhi’s decision to ban the book was great, not only for Indian Muslims, but also for Hindus. The book carried abuse against the Prophet, and if you read between the lines, there was an instance of abuse against Hindu gods as well.

On Mumbaikars and their questions…
They ask me the definitions of jihad, fundamentalist, terrorist and extremist. When people ask me if Muslims are extremists, I tell them yes. We are extremely honest, extremely loving, and extremely just.

On Sania Mirza and the fatwa controversy…
Everyone has different levels of modesty. There were tennis players who wore long skirts and performed just as well. But personally, I support Sania Mirza as she prays five times a day.

  2. what on earth is he saying about Sania Mirza?? How can her skirts be ignored,
one who does not pray, or does not fast, or does not preserve the hijab , etc then one has failed to fulfil the compulsory criteria, After all they are all fardh.
On top of all that she is choosing to publise herself on media, so i dnt see nything but wrong in all this.
    ?

  3. I would request the person who wrote about Dr.Zakir Naik’s talk to kindly mention the whole talk, not a part of it, dont quote out of context otherwise it will spread misconception about Islam and lack of trust about a person like Dr. Zakir Naik.

I have heard the talk in which Dr. Zakia Naik answered the question about Sania Mirza’s dress. He didn’t say that it can be ignored which might mean to someone that he is saying that its no problem for a muslim girl to wear such dress. In his talk he said that we should not talk and condemn her like this, instead we should talk to her with hikmat. He said that she is at least not like the cricketers who are doing even a greater haram by skipping 5 times salat, she offers her prayers and on the basis of this we can expect that Allah will give her guidance and she will start wearing dresses which are considered proper and modest for a girl in Islam inshAllah. He said that Islam is not against spreading international sports like lawn tennis, and its very likely that if Sania Mirza wears long/loosely fitted dresses as Islam asks to wear then there might be 1% or half a percent degradation in her performance but when you are following the commandments of Allah and He is with you then imagine how much improvement you can get in your performance. This is what he mentions that, instead directly condemning her, talk to her with hikmat. We should encourage and appreciate her for what she does right now (praying 5 times) and also let her know that it will be of much more benefit to her in this world for her success and for hereafter if she follows all of Allah’s orders. Stop wearing short skirts does not mean stop playing lawn tennis.
